Over the span of 9 years of working in a corporate and non-corporate environment, I have learned how to respond to an email assertively. Below are a few email templates you should use to sound assertive.

You want to say: my schedule matters too!

Say this: Could you do (time) on (day/date)?

Not this: what works for you? or does (time) sound good?

You want to say: you are welcome!

Say this: Always happy to help!

Not this: no problem/ no worries/ you are welcome

You want to say: I know what I am saying/doing?

Say this: It would be best if we...

Not this: I think maybe we should.....

You want to say: Do you get it?

Say this: Let me know if you have any questions/ let me know if you need further clarification.

Not this: trust this makes sense/does that makes sense / you know what I mean...

You want to say: what the heck is happening?

Say this: When can I expect an update?

Not this: wanted to check it/ wanted to follow up...

You want to say: I made an error

Say this: Nice catch! updated file attached. thanks for letting me know.

Not this: apologies, my bad / that slipped my mind...
